After a pancake breakfast on Sunday morning, we drove to the library.
Everyone had a bag or basket. I proclaimed every egg to be worth a
dollar. When Griff realized that many of the eggs were well above ground
level and he wasn't going to have to bend over, the competition was on!
This building was originally a church so it still has some of the original stained glass windows. A few of the wooden pews have been saved though they aren't very comfortable for sitting.
The building was slowly falling apart when I first moved to Belmont. Then the community decided it was worth saving. A lot of volunteer work and fund raising took place. It is no longer an eye-sore, but a treasure.
Sarah found enough eggs to satisfy her competitive spirit and then became more interested in the books.
Gregg grabbed fast and then went back over the same area to look more closely.
Decades ago the library was in the basement of this building and this room was just used for town meetings. Then William OConnor took over the job of librarian. It was a volunteer position and the library was only open 4 hours a week. William designed a way to have the library upstairs and still be able to hold meetings. He moved all of the old bookcases and then carried up all of the books. After the books sat on the shelves in this new space for awhile, there was room for more books on each shelf. The basement had been damp and as the books dried out, they actually shrank.
Ursula was enjoying Jake so much that she brought him along for our Easter egg hunt. He wasn't much of a help. He he has wound his leash around her legs!
Even so, she managed to find 27 eggs. I recently received a thank you note saying that she used her winnings to buy books and that they "are really enjoyable!"
Because in past years Ursula has had a treasure hunt for gifts I used to hide around the house, one large egg at home had a riddle inside. She solved the riddle in order to find the few small gifts I had gotten for this year before we expanded the egg hunt for all of us "kids".
It was well worth renting the library for an hour! I'm sure we will do it again next year...
